7. Arrival to Rome

5/24-5/26

Rome was a whole nether animal. When we made it to the train station it felt like an entire airport. It was massive!
It took us forever to find the Spanish steps, our first stop, in the blazing heat. I didn;t realize that there were real, authentic Egyptian obelisk in Rome, and how tall they were

The next day was the colosseum. It was quite underwhelming. Being in such ruin ruined what was once a engineering marvel. Its such a shame that the building acted as a query for materials since we forgot how to build after the fall of the Roman empire. Imagination was needed to enjoy the building more fully.

The arch of constintine was neat to see. I rememeber attempting to draw the structure on Thursday night sketching. It was exciting to finally visit what we have been drawing and studying all semester long.

The next day were the two churches san carlo alle Quattro Fontane and Sant Andrea al Quirinale. I was suprised how similar they were to each other as well as their similarities to the Pantheon.

The hexagon, ovel, cross shape of San Quattro was mesmorizing. The space felt airy and large comparitively to its actual size. Sant Andrea felt completely over the top elaberate. Everything was made out of the finest materials possible. Marble, bronze, and gold were everywhere. Every material was made specifically for where it was.
